ICC profiles

Generation of ICC profiles

An ICC profile (or colour profile) is a well defined set of data describing the colour gamut of any device which captures or displays colour, e.g. monitors, printers, scanners, etc.

In digital imaging, colour management using ICC profiles is the controlled conversion between the colour representations of various devices, such as image scanners, digital cameras, monitors, TV screens, film printers, computer printers, offset presses, and corresponding media.

The primary goal of colour management is to obtain a good match across colour devices and helps to achieve the same colour appearance on all such devices.

For the calibration of a scanner a target is required. Such a target consists of a selection of reference colour patches to be scanned by the device. With the help of sophisticated software the measured colour values are compared with the tabulated reference values and the best fitting ICC profile is generated.

ICC profiling of a printer works quite similar. A digital test target containing a set of colour patches is printed on the device, then the colour patches of the print out are measured with a spectrophotometer, and finally sophisticated software compares the measured and reference colour values and generates the best fitting ICC profile.

A spectrophotometer for doing the measurements is a prerequisite to fulfil high quality standards. If you don’t want to buy an expensive spectrophotometer, we can perform the respective measurements on your target and generate the ICC prolife for you.
